Driving Tips for Fort-de-France

The A1, the island's only motorway, covers about 7 km (4 mi) between the airport area and Fort-de-France, so you reach the capital quickly after pickup.

Traffic Rules in Fort-de-France

  • Drive on the right, as in mainland France.
  • Speed limits are 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns; on open roads and the A1, follow the posted signs.

Traffic rules and fines can change — always confirm current regulations before you drive.

Road Conditions and Navigation

  • Roads south of Fort-de-France are four-lane, well suited for fast, easy travel.
  • Coastal roads wind and climb steeply, rewarding unhurried drivers with sea views.
  • Traffic builds around the city at peak hours and in summer, so mornings run smoothest.

Parking in Fort-de-France

Metered street spaces and public car parks share the load, so keep to the paid time to avoid a fine or wheel clamp.

  • Perrinon underground car park: Close to the town hall.
  • La Savane car park: Near La Savane park in the city center.

Fueling Instructions

  • Local labels include Gazole (diesel) and SP95 (unleaded gasoline).

SIXT Tip: Save time when returning your vehicle by letting us take care of refueling or charging with the optional Refueling/recharging service.

Tolls

Martinique has no toll motorways, so no tolls apply for local roads. For personalized advice on routes and driving, the SIXT branch team will gladly assist you at pick-up.

After reading past reviews, I approached our Sixt car rental in Martinique with concern but it was a flawless experience. The airport shuttle arrived within 10 minutes and took us to a clean and modern facility where cheerful, smiling staff processed our rental in 5 minutes. When I asked about a cleaning fee, the young lady assured me that this wouldn't be charged and it wasn't. And they gave me a brand new Dacia Duster which is the vehicle I'd reserved. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Sixt Car Rental at the Martinique airport.

Shuttle service was slow as Sixt is so busy at this airport, but the service at the rental desk was perfect and fast and the was was perfect. There was no hassle to buy insurance or on the return.
