Winter in Iceland
As you can imagine, Iceland gets cold in the winter. However, this is also the best time to see the Northern Lights, so head north and keep your eyes peeled at night. You can also head to the glaciers to enjoy some skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling or snowshoeing. This is also the best time to head to the Blue Lagoon and soak in the warm healing waters.

Driving in Iceland can be treacherous. It’s recommended to book a vehicle with all-wheel drive and avoid certain roads that are rough or impassable due to snow or ice. You are allowed to take your SIXT rental on local ferries from the mainland to the islands, except the ferry from Seyðisfjörður.

We rented a compact car for 10 days in Iceland. Upon arriving we were offered an upgrade to a Jeep Compass for an extremely reasonable rate, plus a second driver added. The individual working at the front desk (unfortunately I do not have his name) was professional, kind, answered our questions, and gave helpful tips about the area and driving around the country. The car was a hybrid but due to our route and lodging options we only charged it once, using petrol the rest of the time. The 4x4 capabilities were helpful during some of the ice passages and the car was comfortable to ride in. Our flight was canceled and we needed to extend the rental by one day, which was no problem. When we checked in the car Grzegorz assisted us and even shuttled us back to the airport. Exceptional service and we appreciated the kindness showed.

Sixt was great! It was our first time in Iceland and the weather is CRAZY. Like, next level crazy. When we checked in, the Sixt employee who helped us walked us through general restrictions in the country (parking, etc) and also helped us figure out which roads were open/closed and how best to get to our hotel outside of Reykjavik. The car was clean, exactly as we had ordered, and great for all the conditions we drove in (snow, sleet, slush, hail, extreme wind gusts, sand, and fog). At the end of our trip, the very helpful Grzegorz made return a breeze. He actually drove us to the front door of the airport (about a 3 minute trip from the rental station) so we didn’t have to wait for a shuttle or stand in the cold. Incredible service! Grzegorz was also very knowledgeable and helpful - we will absolutely rent from Sixt the next time we are in Iceland.
